Asian Paints: The Complete Specification Guide for Indian Architects and Interior Designers
Asian Paints is on every Indian project — but most architects specify it wrong. Complete guide to interior, exterior, texture, and wood finishes with specification tips for 2026.
Paint is the last material applied and the first thing noticed. It covers more surface area than any other finish material in a building — every wall, every ceiling, every piece of joinery — and it is specified with less deliberation than almost any other element of the project.
Most Indian architects specify paint in one of two ways: they tell the client to visit the Asian Paints store and pick a colour, or they write "two coats emulsion paint in approved shade" on the finish schedule and leave the rest to the contractor. Neither approach produces reliable results.
Asian Paints is India's largest paint company — with a product range covering interior emulsions, exterior coatings, texture finishes, wood finishes, waterproofing coatings, and industrial paints. Understanding what each product in that range is actually designed for, and specifying correctly for the application, is the difference between a painted finish that performs for a decade and one that peels, stains, or fades within the first monsoon.
Why Paint Specification Matters More Than Most Architects Acknowledge
Paint is the most frequently replaced surface finish in any building — more so than tiles, stone, or laminates. The quality of the paint system specified determines how long the finish lasts, how it responds to Indian climate conditions, and how much maintenance it requires.
In Indian residential and commercial projects, poorly specified paint causes:
Peeling and flaking within 1–2 years in humid coastal cities
Fungal and mould growth on north-facing and shaded walls
Fading and chalking on south and west-facing exterior surfaces
Efflorescence — white salt deposits — on plastered exterior walls
Staining from water ingress at wall-ceiling junctions
Every one of these failures is preventable through correct product selection and surface preparation specification. The paint itself is rarely the failure — the specification and application process is.
Understanding the Asian Paints Product Range
Interior Emulsion Paints

Royale — Premium Interior Range
Asian Paints Royale is the flagship premium interior emulsion range — positioned for living rooms, bedrooms, and primary spaces in mid-to-premium residential and commercial projects.
Key products:
Royale Shyne — high-sheen interior emulsion. Washable surface — resists everyday marks and can be wiped clean. Specify for: living rooms, dining areas, corridors in homes with children, hotel guestrooms, office reception areas.
Royale Aspira — low-sheen interior emulsion with better colour depth than standard Royale. The premium finish for spaces where colour richness and a soft luxurious appearance are the brief.
Royale Matt — completely flat (zero sheen) finish. Best for concealing surface imperfections — the flat finish does not reflect light and therefore does not highlight plastering undulations. Specify for: bedrooms, ceilings, and spaces where a completely matte look is the design brief. Note: flat emulsions are not washable — marks and smudges cannot be wiped off without damaging the surface.
Royale Health Shield — anti-bacterial variant formulated to inhibit microbial growth on painted surfaces. Specify for: hospitals, clinics, schools, food preparation areas, and children's rooms.
Royale Luxury Emulsion — the ultra-premium option with a silky smooth finish. For luxury residential projects where the paint finish quality itself is a design statement.
Tractor Emulsion — Mid-Range Interior
The most widely used interior paint in Indian residential construction — mid-range price, reliable quality, available in a wide colour range. Appropriate for bedrooms, utility areas, service spaces, and rental residential where premium finish is not the primary brief.
Tractor Emulsion Shyne — washable variant for mid-range applications.
Apcolite — Economy Interior Range
Economy-grade interior emulsion for low-budget residential, utility spaces, and construction-stage applications. Not appropriate for finished living spaces in any quality residential or commercial project.
Exterior Paints

Exterior paint specification in India is significantly more demanding than interior — surfaces face UV radiation, monsoon driving rain, temperature cycling, and biological growth. Standard interior paint applied externally will fail rapidly.
Apex — Premium Exterior Range
Asian Paints Apex is the flagship exterior paint range — formulated specifically for Indian climate conditions.
Apex Ultima — the premium exterior emulsion with the highest durability rating in the Apex range. 10-year performance warranty from Asian Paints. Specify for: all exterior walls on premium residential, commercial, and institutional projects. The correct default for any quality exterior specification.
Apex Weatherproof — exterior paint with waterproofing properties. Provides an additional layer of water resistance on plastered walls. Specify for: exterior walls in high-rainfall regions (Mumbai, Kerala, North-East India), north-facing walls, and areas with known water ingress.
Apex Tiling Guard — exterior coating that prevents tile and paint debonding from wall surface. Specify for: exterior walls with previous history of paint peeling.
Apex Duracast — exterior texture finish. Adds a textured surface that hides surface imperfections and adds visual depth. Available in fine and coarse textures. Specify for: large exterior wall areas where surface imperfections in plaster need to be concealed, or where texture is the design brief.
ACE Exterior Emulsion — economy exterior paint for low-budget residential construction. Not appropriate for premium projects.
Texture Finishes

Asian Paints' texture finish range — applied roller, trowel, or spray — adds decorative surface texture to interior and exterior walls.
Key products:
Royale Play — premium interior texture range. Dozens of texture patterns — from rough artisan finishes to smooth metallic effects. Applied by trained Asian Paints contractors using specific tools for each pattern. Specify for: feature walls in living rooms, hotel lobbies, restaurant interiors, office reception areas.
Royale Play Metallics — metallic-finish texture for premium feature walls. Gold, silver, copper, and bronze effects. High visual impact for luxury residential and hospitality.
Apex Duracast — exterior texture, previously mentioned. Specify for exterior applications only — interior texture products are not formulated for exterior exposure.
Specification note for textures: Asian Paints Royale Play textures must be applied by Asian Paints-trained contractors to achieve the pattern as shown in reference samples. Specify this requirement explicitly — an untrained contractor applying Royale Play with standard tools will not produce the correct finish.
Wood Finishes
Woodtech Range
Asian Paints' wood finish range covers interior wood surfaces — furniture, doors, windows, joinery, and flooring.
Woodtech Politura — polyurethane-based wood finish. High durability, available in gloss, semi-gloss, and matte sheens. The standard specification for interior wood furniture and joinery in Indian residential and commercial projects.
Woodtech Touchwood — water-based wood finish. Lower VOC than polyurethane variants — specify for spaces where low odour is a requirement (occupied spaces, schools, healthcare).
Woodtech Prelude — wood primer and sanding sealer for use under the topcoat system. Specify as part of a complete wood finish system — not topcoat alone.
Specification note: Wood finishes require a complete system specification — primer, intermediate coats, and topcoat — not just the topcoat. Specifying topcoat only without primer allows for contractor shortcuts that produce poor adhesion and early failure.
Waterproofing Products
Asian Paints' waterproofing range — under the Dr. Fixit umbrella (Asian Paints acquired Pidilite's Dr. Fixit brand) — covers terrace, bathroom, and wall waterproofing applications.
Key products:
Dr. Fixit Newcoat — crystalline waterproofing coating for concrete and masonry
Dr. Fixit Pidifin — polymer waterproofing for bathroom and wet area applications
Dr. Fixit Roofseal — terrace and roof waterproofing system
Specify these as part of the waterproofing system specification alongside the paint specification — not as afterthoughts.
Surface Preparation — The Most Critical Specification

The most important factor in paint performance is not the paint brand or product selected. It is surface preparation. Paint applied over a poorly prepared surface will fail regardless of quality — adhesion is a function of the substrate condition, not the coating.
Mandatory surface preparation specification for plastered walls:
Curing — new plaster must cure for minimum 28 days before paint application. Painting fresh plaster causes blistering and peeling as moisture escapes.
Putty application — Asian Paints Wall Putty (or equivalent) applied over plastered surfaces fills micro-pores and provides a smooth, consistent base. Specify two coats of wall putty, sanded between coats.
Priming — a primer coat before the finish emulsion. Primer seals the surface, improves adhesion, and ensures even absorption of the finish coat. Specify Asian Paints Primer or Primer Sealer — do not allow contractors to skip the primer coat.
Sealer for new plaster — on very fresh or alkaline plaster, specify an alkali-resistant primer rather than standard primer. New plaster is strongly alkaline — standard emulsion paint applied directly on new plaster without alkali-resistant primer saponifies (breaks down) and peels.
Colour Selection — The Indian Specific Challenges
Colour looks different in Indian conditions than it does in the European or American reference palettes that dominate design media:
Strong sunlight saturates colours. Colours that appear soft and subtle in Northern European light read as vivid and intense in Indian direct sunlight. When selecting exterior colours, always view samples in direct Indian sunlight at the specific orientation of the wall being painted.
Indian interiors have less natural light than photography suggests. Interior paint colours selected from Instagram or Pinterest references are photographed in professional lighting conditions. The same colour in a typical Indian apartment with limited natural light will read darker and sometimes warmer. View colours in the actual space at different times of day before confirming.
Asian Paints ColourNext and Colour Consultancy: Asian Paints offers professional colour consultancy through their store network and their online ColourNext tool — a service worth directing clients toward for colour selection rather than handling colour selection as part of the architectural scope without dedicated time for it.
Writing a Complete Paint Specification Schedule
Every project should have a paint specification schedule — a room-by-room list of:
Surface (wall, ceiling, woodwork)
Product name and grade
Colour code (Asian Paints colour reference number, not just colour name)
Number of coats
Sheen level (matte, eggshell, semi-gloss, gloss)
Surface preparation requirements
A complete paint schedule takes one hour to prepare for a residential project and prevents every contractor substitution, every wrong-sheen application, and every colour dispute that arises from verbal-only specification.
Keeping Paint Specifications Organised
Paint specifications change — clients change colours, contractors propose substitutions, touch-up shades need to be recorded for future maintenance. Keeping the current approved paint schedule accessible to the contractor, the client, and the site supervisor throughout the project prevents the confusion that generates callbacks.
Wallxy keeps all finish schedules, material approvals, and contractor communications organised in one project workspace — accessible to everyone on the team throughout design and construction. See how Wallxy works →
